"The things I learned from my experience in music in school are
discipline, perseverance, dependability, composure, courage and pride in results. . .
Not a bad preparation for the workforce!" Gregory Anrig
The Teacher
Marty sees it as his obligation to develop and nurture the student with a broad range of guitar associated skills. As a Suzuki Trained Teacher, he is particularly interested in the student’s character development through talent education. Under his study, one can expect to develop a very high level of technical and artistic proficiency preparing them for any performance situation. More importantly, however, they will become highly cultured and dignified citizens with rewarding values and aspirations. Mr. Edwards believes music, having no language barriers, can be the avenue in which the world is unified. To initiate that reality in his students is his overall dream.
For years now, Marty has been passionately teaching successful musicians. While in his undergraduate, he worked as a teaching assistant for Dr. Robert Lewis in the Berea College Music Department. At the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, he served as Graduate Assistant under Joseph Pecoraro. There he instructed several guitar classes and taught students privately. Presently, Marty is an instructor for the Young Guitarist section of the Piedmont Suzuki Studio. Additionally, he teaches and directs the guitar ensemble at Knollwood Baptist Church. Suzuki Method
This method of musical instruction is specifically geared for teaching young children. A registered guitar teacher of the Suzuki Method with the Suzuki Association of America, Marty believes that all children from all walks of life have extraordinary amounts of potential and ability. This happens to be the core belief of this method of talent education as well. For more in depth information about the Suzuki Method please visit SAA or ISA websites. Alexander Technique
Another area of high importance to Marty is healthy body movement. Musicians over the years have had to deal with a multitude of repetitive motion related injuries that often hinders their ability to perform at full potential or, more unfortunately, sometimes forces them to stop altogether. What’s interesting about the issue is, for the most part, these problems are completely avoidable and sometimes reversible with proper training. The Alexander Technique was developed on the premise of correcting and preventing these issues. To satisfy his concern for the problem, Mr. Edwards studied intensively with Alexander teacher Dr. Ann Rhodes focusing particularly on the technique’s guitar applications. Ever since, he has applied his Alexander Technique findings to his teaching, practice, and performance. For more information regarding Alexander Technique please visit AlexanderTechnique.com.
